"Local Celebrity Interview with John Hancock of WBT AM 1160 & 99.3 FM" Listen Every Night at 6-9pm
|
We often go through life hearing people on radio, but we really never get to know who they really are and what there about.
We went out and interviewed John Hancock of WBT AM Radio and had an awesome time. It felt like we were hanging out with
an old friend. He is a true gentleman and he has a passion for radio, music and just living life. We could use more people like
him in our world.
1) Was radio your Dream job when you were a kid? Was it what you always wanted to do or were there other jobs you thought about too?
Radio had a big influence on my life, but I didn't’ know it until much later. I always enjoyed radio, St. Louis Cardinal games when
I was a kid, and KIMN in Denver. I got in to it almost by accident. Estes Park High School sent me to the local 500 watt (small
town --- one station) radio station as a work study program and to get me out of the building for 5 hours a day. This gave them an
opportunity to educate other kids! I suppose I had a dream of working at KIMN in Denver, but it just didn't work out. It took me 14
stations and 7 states to find WBT in Charlotte. That has fulfilled any dream I thought I ever had in radio. The 90’s were gold for
me here, and the rest has been equally rewarding and comfortable. I’ve had the opportunity to work for, and with, some great
people. That’s what it’s all about.
2) How does it feel to hear yourself on the radio? You are heard all over the East coast, that’s amazing, not many folks can say that.
You are in peoples homes all over, that’s huge. Your touching thousands of peoples lives.
I still turn me off … You get used to it. In the beginning it was interesting, but now it’s just, you know, what I do…
3) Born where? Most memories of growing up?
I was born in Denver Colorado and lived most of my life in Estes Park, Colorado. A few years in St. Louis watching Stan Musual
and then back to Colorado. Estes Park holds my heart. I can’t even tell you how proud I am to be from there! God’s Country ---
Beautiful!
4) Favorite thing you do to unwind from the stress of living life?
Music, I enjoy listening, studying, and the pursuit of music. I came from eclectic FM radio roots. It’s the one thing lacking in
Charlotte. A true AAA formatted station. Too bad!!! Probably won’t happen either. They’re not big time rating successes.
5) We only live so long then pass on. What do you want to be remembered for after you go to the heavens above?
I guess I’d be proud if anybody remembers me at all. That’s the greatest honor… “Funny ” Would work…
A.) Then what music do you want at your funeral and what would your tombstone say on it? Avett Brothers [Concord’s Own] , “
Go to Sleep.” Or Dylan – Forever Young!
6) Favorite thing about Charlotte NC?
The people here are the best. I can’t say enough for the people of Charlotte, just great. We’ve done a lot of good things for
people together over the years. Charlotte had ALWAYS been so good to me!
7) Favorite Restaurant in Charlotte?
I loved Frankies, wish I could reopen it…I have along relationship with Trio on 51, I love the whole package (food and service) at
Greek Isles. And I’ll try anyone who does Pizza.
8) All time Favorite Band/singer?
Too many to list! I do love the Avetts. Their songwriting blows me away. I love so many…Miles Davis…Willie Nelson …Neil
Young…Tom Petty… Buddy Rich…I’m all over the place!
9) A lot of music years ago evolved to become classics, do you think todays music will be headed in that direction?
Classics will be harder to achieve because the interests today are so diverse, and it will not be as pigeonholed and as predictable
as years ago. There is a lot of great music out there. Songwriting might be making a comeback! That would be great…
10.) Do you think life is better nowadays with cell phones, technology , computers and etc.
Not for my lifestyle. I do not understand why most folks feel the need to be available 24/7. Some of the technology is great. I’m
not giving up my i-pod…or TV, but for all the advantages we should have with all the new technology and access to information,
I’m not sure we are utilizing it all as well as we can as a society. (Geez…I sound like my dad!)
11.) You think food was healthier years ago?
Not necessarily, but we ate at home more often, didn't’ have access to stuff like pizza at all hours of the day. In my house when I
was a kid, we ate dinner together in the evening no matter what. We all saw each other at the dinner table. I don’t know if that’s
still happening as much.
12.) Favorite Drink?
WATER !!! Cold out of the refrigerator! I drink…but not much…(although that third Scotch and water while watching the ocean
or a Mountain sunset is still perfect )
13.) Favorite vacation spot near Charlotte?
I’ve always loved Blowing Rock, reminds me a little of home, and I Love Valle Crucis…Asheville (I could live there).
To the east, Ocean Isle or Sunset Beach I love those beaches at sunrise!
14.) People who influence you.
You mean from a positive standpoint I assume…Hundreds… good people I’ve worked with but not necessarily names you would
know. Paul Moyer, Mike Butts, Bob Greenlee, Jay Mack and many more --- .
15.) Is there something you would like to see Charlotte have that we currently don’t?
You have lived in many cities, what do you think Charlotte needs.
An IN N’ Out Burger would be good… Austin style Texas Brisket….and Georgetown, Texas chicken fried steak.
A few less ties would be welcome … sometimes this town need to unclench, if you know what I mean!
16.) Where do you think you will be in 20 years?
Retired in the Carolina or Colorado Mountains.
17.) When’s your Birthday?
18.) Favorite thing to do in spare time in Charlotte?
Drive my Crossfire, listen to the i-pod, and get lost. I love going though small towns and enjoying the scenery.
19.) How did you meet your wife?
On a commercial shoot at WTVI years ago. She made me wear a funny hat during it. I hit her with those magic words that
women love to hear “Uh..do you eat?” and he rest is history!
20.) You have any other pets beside the Westie now?
Yes, we have two Westies again, Clapton and Meghan.
21.) Favorite TV show of all time. One that you will never forget.
I’m currently addicted to Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Favorite of all time would probably have to be The Tonight Show with
Johnnie Carson.
22.) Favorite Classic Car?
1956 and 1957 T-Bird, or a 53 Corvette.
23.) Movie you will never forget as long as you live and why?
The Exorcist … to this day, no movie effected me for a few hours like that one did.
24.) If you won the lottery, how would your life change?
I’d buy a Radio Station somewhere in the mountains, do the morning show when I felt like it, and travel.
25.) Last time you vacuumed?
I have a puppy (7/2010) Two weeks ago.
26.) Cartoon character you wouldn't’t mind being if you had to live life in a cartoon type of world
”Archie” , he hung out with Betty and Veronica. Lucky guy.
27.) All the ladies want to know, Boxers or Briefs.
