Al's View Of Growing Up With Television
|
Television and Where would we be without it?
Have you ever wondered where we all would be without television?
We all grew up with it and it has been part of our lives since day one. When we were brought home
from the hospitals as babies, televisions was there to sooth us and give us something to stare at or
listen to while trying to get to sleep.
Then as we got older and into school, we used to watch cartoons before and after school. Not to
mention all the cool commercials we used to see. Like the Evil Knievel motorcycle toys, easy bake
ovens, slinky, twister, and tons of other classic commercials. Yeah, those were great days. Rushing
home from school to see the latest G-force cartoon or who could forget the Flintstones. Almost seems
like it was more important to watch our favorite shows than to do our homework at times. Remember
telling your mom, five more minutes, just five more minutes and then I will do my homework. Five
more minutes always turned into twenty-five more minutes.
Then as we got older the cartoons turned into television shows, Chips, 240 Robert, Wonder Women,
The Bionic Man, Emergency One, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Starsky and Hutch, Bj and the
Bear, General Hospital, Days of our Lives and so on and so on, the list is endless.
Yeah, we watched a lot of TV and that was before we even had cable. We had to either mess with
those old Rabbit ears or put up one of those beauties called antennae’s on the outside of the house.
Those made the neighborhood really look lovely. They were especially great for a nice ole lightning
strike. That kept the TV repairman busy in our neighborhood and it kept his wallet full. That explains
why he was always smiling when we would see him drive up in his TV repair van. Yeah, they always
used vans, never a car, pickup, or etc, but a van. Back to my original thought here. Imagine if we
had cable with 100 plus channels back then? We would never have left the house.
Yeah, TV has enriched our lives quite a bit. We even had dinners made especially to heat up in the
oven so we could sit in front of the TV without missing a minute of our favorite shows. The good ole
TV Dinner was born. Who could forget those nice blue cartons with a TV printed on it, with the
aluminum tray with the food in it. Try to find one of those aluminum trays nowadays, hard to do since
plastic has become the big superstar of our time.
Yeah, TV has been with us through it all. Men landing on the moon, Famous Presidential elections,
JR getting Shot and all sorts of historic moments. TV is kind of part of us, maybe even part of our
DNA. Today we can’t live without a television in every room, nevertheless having a TV smaller than
60 inches and nothing less than 200 channels.
So I ask you, are we any better off having television in our life? If we didn’t have television in our
lives growing up, we may have done our homework more often, actually talked to one another as a
family, listened to one another more, read more books, spent time doing something that really
mattered, helped others more often and so on and so on. But would life have been as much fun as it
was growing up, if we didn’t have television? NAAAAAA, Television is like the apples in apple pie. If
there are no apples, there’s no pie. If there’s no television, there’s no fun in growing up with our
favorite shows.
My two Cents
